Yes, a bold and somewhat controversial statement and yes, I just went there! But I love camping so much, that I really do believe that EVERYONE can not only benefit from camping, but enjoy it too.
Each year more and more families decide to take up camping.
And now, more than ever, it’s a hobby that is accessible to anyone, from the hardened backpacker to those not quite willing to give up all their home comforts.
Camping is what you make it, but what do people already camping think about it?
The joys of subjecting myself to the buggy, lumpy, and unpredictable great outdoors is what make me love camping.
And besides those, here I give you 10 more reasons why you should too!
1. BECAUSE ITS FREE
Whether you’re traveling long term or camping on a budget, learning how to find free camping is an essential skill.
In Finland and Sweden they have the “free man’s law”, meaning you can camp wherever you like. But in the US or Canada, you’ve got to become very good at finding places where you can camp for free.
One of my go-to-resource to find these campsites is FreeCampsites.net, a simple, map based search engine to find free and cheap camping areas.
Unless otherwise marked, you can also camp for free in US National Forests & Grassland and use the National Forest Map Locator to find information about specific jurisdictions you are looking to camp in.
Since these lands are public, you are legally entitled to use them.
And due to the lack of amenities, it’s essential you adhere to the principles of Leave No Trace while camping.
2. BECAUSE YOU DON’T JUST HAVE TO CAMP ON THE FLOOR
With all the solutions now at your disposal, sleeping under the stars doesn’t have to include the ground.
You can now get off the ground and into the air, hanging in a tree, on the side of a mountain or hammock camping.
Without having to look for a flat patch of ground, site selection will be a breeze, and if it rains, you’ll be dangling above the wet ground—not lying in a puddle.
3. BECAUSE YOU DON’T NEED MUCH TO CAMP
The beauty of camping is that you can pretty much decide what you want to wake up to; be it the mountains, rolling green hills, a trickling brook or an eerie forest (though do seek permission before pitching up).
You can be in a new place every day, having the freedom to come and go as you please, not needing to adhere to schedules or timetables that other types of holiday might prescribe.
It typically requires minimal planning and you can visit whatever you like whenever you like, and there won’t be that awkward moment when you return to your room to find housekeeping clearing up your mess.
4. BECAUSE DOGS LOVE IT TOO
If you’ve never took him camping before, turning him into the ultimate outdoors companion can take a bit of trial and error.
But if you’re patient, start small and work on building the kind of relationship where you dog is reliable, responsive and focused on you, then you’ll be able to take him on all your adventures.
Plus they also make a good sleeping-bag warmer.
5. BECAUSE YOU GET TO WAKE UP TO VIEWS LIKE THIS
There’s no limit to the type of view you can wake up to, create yours…
This is probably the #1 reason why I love camping.
When camping with my family, our day revolves around food even more than normal, which is great!
It just takes a bit longer to do everything when your home is a tent, so food planning, preparing and eating takes up a larger proportion of the day.
But, to be honest we’re at our happiest when we’re talking about, buying, preparing or eating food.
Cooked bananas and bread on sticks? You just don’t do this at home!
7. IT BRINGS EVERYONE TOGETHER
Without a connection to the web – possibly without electricity full stop – camping provides the perfect opportunity for families or friends to reconnect without the usual distractions.
Eating together, playing together and sleeping huddled up together create some wonderful, long-lasting memories.
8. IT’S OK NOT TO WASH EVERYDAY
Well, it’s acceptable at least. Communal showers can be grotty and the whole point of camping is to rough it a bit, isn’t it? Wet Wipes, anyone?

9. THE EQUIPMENT
Arguably, camping offers gadget-fans THE best array of equipment, with new, innovative products coming onto the market all the time, from headlamps to stove, tents and backpacks.
For example, though VITCHELO isn’t a huge brand name, the rarity and ease of use of the separate buttons for red and white LEDs of its V800 headlamp have earned the brand to the status of best headlamp for casual use by The WireCutter, just right behind the BlackDiamond Spot.
10. BEING OUTDOORS IS THE BEST
A chance to see something new and be outdoors…
IS IT SO HARD TO LOVE CAMPING?
These are just a handful of honest reasons to love camping. And if this hasn’t got you excited I don’t know what else will!
There’s loads you can do and the memories that you’ll make will last a lifetime.
